What is blackening treatment? Blackening treatment, also known as bluing, is a common chemical oxidation process for steel surfaces. The principle behind this treatment involves using a chemical solution (usually a mixture of strong alkalis and oxidizers) to react with the steel surface of the chain, resulting in the formation of a very thin layer of iron oxide (Fe₃O₄). This film is typically only 1-2 micrometers thick and does not provide the same level of physical protection as electro-galvanizing. However, its main characteristics are as follows: - Color: The surface takes on a deep blue to blue-black color, which is why the process is called “bluing” or “blackening.” - No change in size: Due to the extremely thin nature of the film, it does not alter the original dimensions of the chain components, which is crucial for high-precision transmission chains. - Moderate wear resistance: The oxide film is relatively soft, so it offers moderate wear resistance.
